Certificate of Competence in Radiation Protection in Angiology

Every specialist title can include several subspecialities or competence programs. One such degree is the Certificate of Competence in Radiation protection in Angiology.

For the performance of diagnostic and therapeutic X-ray examinations in the medium and high dose range, official regulations require appropriate further training. This can be obtained for specialists in angiology with the certificate of competence «Radiation Protection in Angiology». The certificate is issued and administered by the SSA. This theoretical and practical training usually takes place during residency in angiology.

The certificate of competence «Radiation Protection in Angiology» includes the competence to use and operate an X-ray system and comprises:

  • Prescribing radiological applications
  • Justifying, performing and reporting diagnostic and therapeutic applications in the low, medium and high dose range with conventional X-ray equipment. This includes in particular fluoroscopy, which is used in the context of diagnostic and therapeutic examinations.
  • Exercise of the function as radiation protection expert for the above-mentioned applications.

Computer tomographic and mammographic applications are excluded.

  • Federal or recognized non-federal specialist title in angiology.
  • Proof of completion of the BAG-recognized expert course for fluoroscopy for physicians.

They must be under the direction of a person responsible for postgraduate training who holds the certificate of competence «Radiation Protection in Angiology» or another certificate of competence for «Radiation Protection» in the high dose range. This requirement does not apply to radiology training centers.

General knowledge related to radiation protection is tested in the final examination of the FOPH-approved radiation protection expert course. The subject-specific practical radiation protection competencies have to be documented as «fulfilled» or «not fulfilled» in the logbook.
