Certificate of Competence in Sonography and POCUS

On behalf of the Swiss Institute for Postgraduate Medical Education (SIWF), SGUM manages four proficiency programs of diagnostic ultrasound. For the angiological specialists, the two certificates of competence are Sonography and POCUS.

Certificate of Competence in Sonography

The certificate of competence in Sonography regulates further and advanced training for ultrasound examinations and is divided into six modules and one supplementary module. Ultrasound include comprehensive clinical assessment, clear indication and evaluation of findings. The program was introduced in 2000. The qualification requires a federal or recognized specialist title. Holders of the certificate are able to use ultrasound competently as a diagnostic tool in their specialty and to make correct diagnoses. They are required to undertake regular continuing education; per recertification a period of five years. Zhis requires 35 credits of structured education and 15 hours of self-study.

Certificate of competence POCUS

POCUS regulates continuing education and training for Point Of Care Ultrasound. It was introduced in 2018. POCUS serves specialists to answer targeted and focused questions in their area of expertise. Currently, courses on 14 components can be taken. Three components target the vascular field: focused ultrasound of the arterial vessels, focused ultrasoundof the venous vessels and vascular punctures. A federal or recognized specialist title is a requirement for acquisition. The POCUS certificate is valid for 5 years from the date of issue, after which recertification must be proven by means of 30 continuing education credits within this time frame.
